“Semper Supra,” a Latin phrase meaning “Always Above,” is not just the name of the song but also the motto of the USSF. This newly adopted anthem is designed to encapsulate the unique esprit de corps of both current and future Guardians, fostering a profound sense of unity and pride among all who serve. The creation of “Semper Supra” was a collaborative endeavor led by two former service members, a process marked by years of dedicated research and meticulous revisions, all to ensure the song would be a fitting representation of the Space Force.
James Teachenor, a talented singer-songwriter and former member of the U.S. Air Force band at the Air Force Academy, is the visionary composer behind “Semper Supra.” He crafted the lyrics and melody, driven by a desire to create a song that truly embodied the Space Force’s capabilities and aspirations. Teachenor initiated this ambitious project in collaboration with Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond when the Space Force was first established in 2019, recognizing the historical importance of this moment.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to establish a Space Force song that will be part of our culture and heritage for years to come,” Gen. Raymond stated, emphasizing the song’s role in building a lasting legacy. “Our traditions are part of the fabric that weave us all together as we execute our missions side-by-side; I will be proud to sing ‘Semper Supra’ alongside my fellow Guardians.”
Following Teachenor’s foundational work, his composition was then passed on to various military bands to develop a full musical arrangement. Twelve musical submissions were considered, showcasing diverse interpretations of Teachenor’s vision. Ultimately, the project led to a fruitful collaboration with Chief Musician Sean Nelson, a trombonist and staff arranger with the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
Nelson detailed his contribution, “I received the melody and words from James, and he wanted me to help add the harmony and to orchestrate it.” He aimed to distinguish the Space Force song from those of other branches, explaining, “At first, it started with singing and the piano. I became familiar with the other branches’ songs, but I wanted this one to have its own modern spin to reflect what the Space Force is – modern, new and very advanced.” Nelson’s arrangement incorporated over 30 instrument parts, resulting in a rich and contemporary sound.
The U.S. Coast Guard Band played and recorded Nelson’s arrangement, which was then submitted to the Space Force for final review. After extensive months of development, revisions, and collaborative refinements, the Space Force selected the definitive version of “Semper Supra.” This final rendition was deemed to best capture the essence of what it means to be a Guardian, a member of the U.S. Space Force.

SEMPER SUPRA
The Official U.S. Space Force Song
We’re the mighty watchful eye,
Guardians beyond the blue,
The invisible front line,
Warfighters brave and true.Boldly reaching into space,
There’s no limit to our sky.
Standing guard both night and day,
We’re the Space Force from on high.
