Podcasts have emerged as a significant and influential medium in contemporary culture, offering a unique platform for creative expression. Among these, Song Exploder, hosted by the exceptionally talented Hrishikesh Hirway, stands out. Hirway, a multifaceted creative force, first came to my attention about three years ago through his insightful podcast. Since then, we’ve maintained a connection, even collaborating when he shared his expertise on the convergence of sound and graphic design at our San Francisco studio. Much like the team at IDEO, Hirway approaches every endeavor with a designer’s mindset. It was a pleasure to reconnect with him for this edition of Creative Crushes.

Who is Hrishikesh Hirway, the Song Creator, in Essence?
In a single sentence, I’d describe myself as a creative jack-of-all-trades. This can be advantageous at times, but often leads to frustration, especially when surrounded by individuals with profound expertise and skill – levels that consistently feel just beyond my grasp. As a Song Creator, this feeling is particularly acute, pushing me to constantly learn and evolve.
Exploring the Craft: Music, Podcasts, and the Journey of a Song Creator
Currently, my primary focus revolves around crafting music and podcasts. As a song creator, I write and perform under the moniker The One AM Radio. My musical endeavors also extend to scoring for film and television, and producing beats within my project, Moors. In the podcasting realm, I produce Song Exploder, where musicians delve into the intricate creative decisions behind their songs, offering listeners a unique glimpse into the song creator’s process. Additionally, I host The West Wing Weekly, a detailed exploration of the acclaimed Aaron Sorkin TV series.
My learning journey has been somewhat unconventional. My formal education is in graphic design, which surprisingly, has profoundly shaped my approach to both music and podcasting. With music, my education has been largely self-directed, learning by immersing myself in discussions with other musicians about their techniques and creative choices. This process of listening and learning became the very foundation for Song Exploder. The podcast, in essence, is an extension of my own desire to understand the nuances of the song creator’s craft through close listening and analysis.
Cherished Possessions of a Creative Mind
When it comes to favorite possessions, three items come to mind:
- My computer: Regardless of the model, it serves as my gateway to virtually everything I do creatively. It’s the central tool for a modern song creator and podcaster.
- My custom Healy electric guitar: It’s not only visually and sonically stunning, but also represents the first time I’ve ever commissioned a custom-made instrument. It’s a tangible symbol of my journey as a song creator.
- My house: Though small, it’s a peaceful and comfortable space where I both live and work. It truly feels like a physical extension of my identity as a song creator and individual.
Inside the Workday of a Song Creator
My home includes a converted garage that functions as my makeshift recording studio. This space houses my essential tools: my computer, piano, and guitars. My typical work session involves focused two-hour blocks at the computer, after which I find my concentration wanes. To refresh, I take breaks pacing in my backyard and around the house, allowing my ears and mind to reset before returning to work. I generally begin working in the early afternoon and continue late into the night, often immersing myself in the creative process of song creation.
Navigating Creative Obstacles as a Song Creator
Overcoming creative block remains an ongoing challenge. Interestingly, Song Exploder itself was conceived partly as a response to writer’s block in my own songwriting. As a song creator, I’m still searching for the definitive solution to this universal creative hurdle. Exploring the processes of other song creators through my podcast has been insightful, but the personal struggle continues.
A Glimpse into the Future
Considering the state of the world, my outlook for 2078 is tinged with uncertainty. At this juncture, my primary hope is simply that there will still be a world to experience in 2078. The future for song creators, and everyone, depends on the choices we make today.
Bucket List Aspirations of a Multifaceted Creative
Perhaps due to my diverse interests, I don’t have one singular, paramount bucket list item. However, I do have three aspirations that share a similar level of importance: producing a feature film, designing a house from the ground up, and visiting all seven continents. But, ultimately, if none of these materialize, I’m confident I’ll discover new and equally fulfilling pursuits. The journey of a song creator is all about embracing new paths.
Creative Inspirations: Current Crushes
Currently, I’m deeply inspired by the music of Grouper and the photographic prints of Phil Chang. Grouper’s sonic landscapes are captivating, and Chang’s work pushes the boundaries of photography as a medium. These artists represent the kind of innovative and boundary-pushing creativity that resonates deeply with me as a song creator.
