Unpacking the Timeless Wisdom of The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”

Hey rock and roll enthusiasts! Welcome back, and a big hello to all the new faces joining our community here at payoffsong.com. It’s fantastic to have you all with us, and a huge thank you to our loyal readers for sticking around during my brief hiatus.

My apologies for the radio silence. Life, as it often does, threw a curveball in the form of a looming deadline on a major project – a classic case of procrastination leading to a whirlwind of work! But on the bright side, while I was heads down, my recent deep dives into the creative worlds of Carole King and James Taylor resonated with so many of you. The response confirmed what I suspected: you’re not just here for the songs, but for the stories behind the music, the creative journeys of the artists themselves.

Inspired by this, and with my 50th high school reunion looming (dance floor, here I come!), I’m revamping our daily content to get back to my original vision for this space. Get ready to groove, because we’re launching a daily dose of danceable tracks from my formative years (1964-1974), every day except Sunday. No lengthy analyses or deep dives (unless you really want them!), just pure musical energy to get you moving.

Not every groove might be your cup of tea? No problem! This daily song feature will have its own dedicated section, giving you complete control over your subscription. Customize your experience by easily opting in or out of sections – find simple instructions here.

Alright, let’s kick things off with a classic that perfectly embodies the spirit of rock and roll and the sometimes-bittersweet realities of life: “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Rolling Stones.

For those who appreciate the studio magic, here’s the album version to get you started:

Rolling Stones – You Can’t Always Get What You Want (Official Lyric Video)

Want to see the Stones in their raw, electrifying prime? Check out this rare live performance of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Filmed in 1968 for The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, this footage wasn’t released until 1996. Why the delay? Rumor has it the Stones, perfectionists as they were, felt their performance didn’t quite measure up to the other incredible acts on the bill. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who later directed the Beatles’ Let It Be, this concert film is a treasure trove. And yes, that’s the legendary Mick Jagger working his stage magic, and keep an eye out for a cameo by John Lennon at the end! Notably, this performance marks Brian Jones’ final appearance with the Rolling Stones. Decide for yourself if they were being too hard on themselves – personally, I think any dance moves you borrow from Dancemeister Mick are moves well learned.
