Years after a debilitating stroke threatened to silence his iconic voice, Travis, age 65, has unveiled a new single, “Where That Came From,” made possible through the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI). This marks a poignant return for the Grammy-winning artist who has been unable to record new music since his stroke in 2013, sparking conversations about the intersection of technology and artistry.
Travis’s journey took a challenging turn when he was hospitalized with a heart condition and subsequently suffered a stroke, severely impacting his ability to speak and, seemingly, to sing. However, the dream of hearing his distinctive baritone again was kept alive by those closest to him and the advancements in AI technology. The initiative to explore AI as a means to recreate Randy Travis’s voice came from Cris Lacy, co-president of Warner Music Nashville. Lacy approached Travis’s wife, Mary, with a question that would change everything: “What if we could take Randy’s voice and recreate it using AI?”

Mary Travis enthusiastically embraced the concept. “We were all over that, so we were so excited,” she shared, highlighting the deep desire to experience her husband’s vocal artistry once more. “All I ever wanted since the day of the stroke was to hear that voice again.” This heartfelt yearning became the driving force behind the ambitious project to harness AI for musical resurrection.
To undertake this unprecedented endeavor, Warner Music Nashville collaborated with computer programmers in London, tasking them with developing an AI system capable of capturing and replicating the essence of Randy Travis’s voice. The programmers developed two distinct AI models. One model was trained using 12 vocal samples from across Travis’s extensive career, while a more comprehensive model utilized 42 samples. This rich archive, stemming back to his debut album “Storms of Life” in 1985, provided ample material for the AI to learn and analyze the nuances of his vocal delivery.
Kyle Lehning, Randy Travis’s longtime producer, played a crucial role in ensuring the authenticity of the AI-generated song. “Where That Came From,” penned by Nashville songwriters Scotty Emerick and John Scott Sherrill, was selected as the perfect vehicle for Travis’s vocal style, reminiscent of his traditional country roots that stood in contrast to the pop-country trends of the late 80s. The production process began with another vocalist recording a demo version of the song. This demo then served as the canvas onto which the AI system would apply Randy Travis’s recreated voice.

Lehning recounted the awe-inspiring moment of witnessing the AI at work. “I really wish somebody had been here with a camera,” he expressed, emphasizing the groundbreaking nature of the process. “And it was stunning, to me, how good it was … right off the bat.” Despite the initial impressive results, Lehning and recording engineer Casey Wood, a longtime collaborator of Travis, meticulously refined the AI output. They recognized that certain aspects lacked the genuine “Randy” feel. By drawing from both AI vocal models and making subtle adjustments to tempo and other vocal characteristics, they aimed to recapture the “old soul quality” that defined Travis’s singing.
Mary Travis emphasized the crucial distinction between this collaborative, human-guided AI project and unauthorized AI-generated content. She lauded the “human element” brought by the producers and engineers, ensuring the final product was not just technically proficient but also emotionally resonant and true to her husband’s artistry.
