To heighten the anticipation, we’re thrilled to share the final song reveal from the Midnight Sun playlist – and this one is truly special. Consider this the definitive “Sun Song,” the overarching theme that encapsulates the entire novel. It’s not tied to a specific scene, but rather, it’s the musical embodiment of Midnight Sun itself, and it’s a track you’ve never heard before in this context.
A Song Lost and Found: The History of the Midnight Sun Anthem
Going back to the Twilight movie production days, one of the most exciting aspects was exploring the incredible music submitted for soundtrack consideration. The Twilight saga soundtracks are renowned for their exceptional music, and the selection process was truly remarkable. Under the guidance of the brilliant music supervisor, Alex Patsavas (whose work is behind many iconic series soundtracks), we were presented with a wealth of amazing musical options – some specifically composed for the films, others pre-existing gems. Naturally, not every song could make the final cut. Many personal favorites ended up released separately, or sadly, simply vanished.
Among these submissions was a particular song by one of my all-time favorite bands. It was an astonishing representation of Edward’s inner turmoil throughout Twilight – the pendulum swing between despair and hope, the ecstasy of first love shadowed by the certainty of impending doom. Perhaps it was precisely because it was so uniquely “Edward” in its essence that it never quite fit within the narrative focus of Bella’s perspective in the movies. And so, it remained, a perfect soundtrack to a story that, for a long time, existed only in my mind. The band, for reasons unknown, never officially released the track. It lived on only on an old submission CD and my personal Midnight Sun playlist.
For a decade, this song has been my private Midnight Sun experience.
When the reality of Midnight Sun truly materialized, and I knew I would finally complete it, my thoughts instinctively turned to the accompanying playlist. The process involved refining, adding, subtracting, and diligently searching for songs that resonated with the story’s emotional landscape. But there was a significant void. It couldn’t truly be the Midnight Sun playlist without the song – the song that, in a way, didn’t officially exist beyond my personal collection.
Fortunately, this story has a happy resolution. With the invaluable assistance of the amazing Alex Patsavas, I managed to reconnect with the band. To my immense delight, they were incredibly supportive and willing to share their music. Therefore, it is with immense pleasure that I present to you the Midnight Sun song.
