“My approach to crafting drum parts for Sleep Token songs is deeply rooted in a fusion of genres,” II explains, shedding light on the diverse sonic palette that informs his distinctive style. “I’ve always drawn significant inspiration from the UK dance music scene, particularly the nuanced rhythms within drum and bass. Exploring these subgenres has equipped me with stylistic elements that I actively integrate into my drumming vocabulary, adding a unique texture to Sleep Token songs.”

Expanding on his influences, II notes, “Beyond the high-energy rhythms of dance music, I’m also heavily influenced by the groove and feel of R&B and pop. These genres have subtly but surely permeated my playing, bringing a different kind of rhythmic sensibility to the heavier foundation I developed growing up playing metal. For me, the natural progression was to explore how these diverse styles could be blended with heavier playing to inject greater versatility and depth into my drum parts across all Sleep Token songs.”

When asked to define his current style, II describes it as “a blend of that signature Abe Cunningham, Deftones-inspired heavy groove, fused with a linear, gospel-influenced approach. This combination, I feel, allows me to create drum parts that are both powerful and nuanced, characteristics that are essential to the overall feel of Sleep Token songs.”

The Evolution of Drumming in Sleep Token’s Musical Journey

Reflecting on the evolution of his drumming from Sleep Token’s debut album to their latest work, II shares, “While my core stylistic intentions and objectives have remained consistent throughout Sleep Token’s journey, my vocabulary behind the kit has undeniably expanded. I consciously strive to avoid relying on repetitive phrases or voicings, pushing myself to ensure that the drum parts remain engaging and fresh, even within the context of our evolving sound. This is a continuous process of refinement. As a musician, I recognize that, like many others, consistency in achieving this ideal is an ongoing challenge. But for me, this very pursuit is intrinsic to the artistic journey itself, constantly shaping how I approach drumming for Sleep Token songs.”

II further elaborates on specific techniques that have become integral to his sound: “I’ve long admired Eric Moore and gospel drummers in general. Certain ‘licks’ from Eric have particularly resonated with me and subtly find their way into my playing. For instance, I often incorporate an eighth-note linear phrase, executed as R-L-R-L-K-R-L-K. Another phrase I frequently use is the ‘3-1-3-2’, a triplet-based pattern of nine notes, played as R-L-R-K and R-L-R on the hands, concluding with two kick drum notes (R-L-R-K-R-L-R-K-K). What I find particularly compelling about this phrasing is its inherent incompleteness; it’s three notes short of resolution. This ‘unfinished’ quality compels me, as a drummer, to creatively complete the phrase, adding my own personal touch to the sticking and overall musicality, which is vital when crafting drum parts for Sleep Token songs.”

“The six-stroke roll also features prominently in my playing, whether in groove-oriented sections or fills. It’s a versatile rudiment that allows me to add complexity and texture to various Sleep Token songs.”

“Additionally, I’m a big proponent of the standard paradiddle. I often use it as a chop starter. It serves as an organic way to signal to the listener that a more technically demanding, rhythmically dense section – particularly from the drums – is approaching. This transition is important in maintaining the dynamic flow within Sleep Token songs.”

Inspiration from Drumming Legends

When discussing his drumming heroes, II reveals, “When I first began playing drums, like many in my generation, I was deeply immersed in the styles of drummers like Joey Jordison, the drummer from Mudvayne (Chad Gray), and extreme speed players like Derek Roddy. I spent countless hours watching their performances, even slowing down YouTube videos in a determined attempt to decipher their techniques, stickings, and underlying influences. Later, I became captivated by the playing of Tony Royster Jr., Eric Moore, and Thomas Pridgen. Their innovative approaches and incredible skill further broadened my understanding of drumming and inspired me to push my own boundaries when creating drum parts for Sleep Token songs.”

Crafting Drum Parts: A Vocal-Centric Approach to Sleep Token Songs

Delving into his songwriting process, II explains, “Most of the time, my starting point for developing drum parts for Sleep Token songs is the vocal melody. I pay close attention to the vocal phrasing, identifying specific syllables that could be enhanced by accents on the drum kit. In a way, I use the vocal line as a rhythmic guide, aiming to create a percussive counterpoint that dances around and within the vocal melody, filling in the spaces and adding rhythmic layers. While it’s not a deliberate rule, songs typically don’t originate from a specific drum part first. The vocal element tends to be the initial spark.”

“Another crucial element I consider during the writing process is any existing syncopation within the song’s structure. This could manifest as a rhythmic pattern in the guitar parts, a breakdown section, or even an electronic element. Identifying and locking into these syncopated elements provides a framework and reduces some of the guesswork in the initial stages of writing drum parts. It gives me a clearer sense of the song’s rhythmic identity and direction, guiding my drumming choices to complement and amplify these existing rhythms within Sleep Token songs.”

Live Performance: Reinterpreting Sleep Token Songs on Stage

Addressing the relationship between studio recordings and live performances, II notes, “I would say that the drum parts I perform live often differ significantly from what was originally recorded on the album. This divergence stems from several factors. Sometimes, after spending more time with a finished track during tour rehearsals, I gain a fresh perspective and can develop more engaging live variations. This allows for a more dynamic and evolving performance of Sleep Token songs.”

“In other instances, these variations emerge organically through the repetition and evolution that naturally occur when playing a song repeatedly over extended periods of touring. A part might subtly shift in feel or sticking simply due to the physical act of playing it night after night. Of course, certain signature parts within each song are essential to maintain the original identity and impact. These might be syncopated guitar riffs or electronic elements that anchor the song’s rhythm. However, within that framework, I strive to inject a degree of spontaneity and adaptation into the live renditions of Sleep Token songs.”

When asked about his favorite songs to perform live, II reveals, “From our first record, Sundowning, I’ve always particularly enjoyed playing ‘Higher’. The drum parts in that song feel incredibly interactive and dynamic to me. It’s a very engaging song to play live, offering a good balance of consistency and variation throughout the performance. Another live favorite is ‘Like That’ from our second record. To this day, I consider the drum parts in ‘Like That’ to be among my personal favorites that I’ve written for Sleep Token songs.”

“Regarding newer material, I especially enjoy performing ‘The Summoning’ live. The addition of a drum solo in the live version grants me greater creative freedom within the song’s structure, and the track itself presents a satisfying level of technical challenge. These elements combine to make ‘The Summoning’ a consistently thrilling song to perform live and showcase the dynamic possibilities within Sleep Token songs.”
