O Canada Song: Reflecting on Our National Anthem and Call to Stand on Guard

This week at church, a sermon profoundly shifted my perspective. Pastor Nathan’s words about honoring those who fought for our freedoms sparked a series of revelations, so much so that I was engrossed in taking notes for what became this series, “We Stand On Guard For Thee!” Even if you’re not Canadian, I believe you’ll find resonance in these reflections.

O Canada, We Stand On Guard For Thee!

“I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the lookout tower. I will watch to see what He will say to me and what I should reply about my complaint.~Habakkuk 2:1 HCSB

Recently, for our Women In Music & Media (WIMM Canada) event in June, we were privileged to host Martina Ortiz-Luis (Martina Ortiz-Luis), the incredibly talented anthem singer for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. At just sixteen, Martina captivates audiences with her powerful renditions of both “O Canada” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Her inspiring presence and voice truly resonated with the women in media at our event.

During Remembrance Day services at church, as we sang “O Canada Song,” the lyrics struck me with renewed depth. I began to contemplate the current state of our nation and questioned if we, as Canadians, are truly upholding the ideals embedded within our national anthem, ideals that those who first sang them envisioned.

The plea within our anthem, where early Canadians sought God to keep our land glorious and free, resonated deeply. It feels as though they entrusted us to partner with the divine in realizing this vision. However, we are witnessing a gradual erosion of these very freedoms, perhaps because we have become complacent in our role to Stand on Guard For Thee.

Similar to the Israelites in Habakkuk’s time, we are all called to assume our positions and safeguard the spiritual well-being of our nation.

Delving into the history of “O Canada song,” I discovered a profound sense of intentionality from our forebears in passing down their faith to future generations. Interestingly, there was another patriotic song, The Maple Leaf Forever, composed for Confederation in 1867, which some, especially #LeafNation fans, might wish were still our anthem! Its chorus passionately implores divine blessing upon our nation eternally.

Chorus: The Maple Leaf, our emblem dear, The Maple Leaf forever! God save our Queen and Heaven bless The Maple Leaf forever!

The original lyrics of “O Canada song,” penned in 1880 by a French-Canadian poet and judge, while differing in translation, echo the same aspiration: that faith would protect our nation and preserve its liberty.

May we, as Canadians, embrace our responsibility and Stand on Guard For Thee for this generation and those to come.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we express our gratitude for the nation of Canada. We acknowledge the unearned freedoms and liberties we enjoy, gifts from those who came before. Grant us the wisdom to remember the sacrifices made to secure these privileges. May we faithfully fulfill our role in passing the torch of faith in Christ to the generations of Canadians who will follow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
