I vividly remember coming home from school and instinctively gravitating towards our family’s Kimball upright piano. As if guided by an unseen hand, my fingers began to play the intro to “Lost In Your Eyes,” a melody that seemed to already exist within me, waiting to be unveiled. The song poured out of me, almost fully formed, and I frantically scribbled down lyrics as the notes flowed. There was an undeniable magic in the air that day, a spark of inspiration that ignited something truly special.
My debut album was already complete, and the excitement of an upcoming summer tour was building. Amidst all the preparations, I knew instinctively that this newly born song, “Lost In Your Eyes,” had to be part of the setlist. It felt too significant to leave behind.
The memory of the audience’s reaction to the opening notes of “Lost In Your Eyes” remains crystal clear. Even before its official release, the crowds responded as if they already knew and loved it, their cheers and applause echoing the instant connection the song forged. It was a powerful validation, a sign that this ballad resonated deeply.
There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that “Lost In Your Eyes” had to be the lead single from the “Electric Youth” album. While some might have considered launching an album with a ballad a risky move, I felt strongly that it was the right choice. Why not offer your best, most heartfelt work first? Give the people what their hearts truly desire.
“Lost In Your Eyes” holds a special place in my journey as it was the second song I had the opportunity to produce myself, and incredibly, it also became my second number one hit. For me, the essence of producing a truly great ballad lies in knowing when to step back and allow the music to speak for itself. It’s not about complex techniques or hidden secrets, but about creating space for emotion to breathe.
Playing “Lost In Your Eyes” live has gifted me with some of the most cherished moments of my career. From the grand stage of the American Music Awards, where I co-hosted and performed, to the vibrant energy of a performance in Chile just last year, and even a surreal seaside serenade for Ryan Seacrest on KTVU Mornings on 2, each performance adds a new layer of memories to this song’s incredible journey.
The song’s reach extends beyond stages and concerts. Last year, I spontaneously crashed a wedding at a restaurant I frequent and offered the newlyweds an impromptu acapella rendition of “Lost In Your Eyes.” In another heartwarming twist, my agent David Shapira’s daughter chose it as her wedding song, a delightful surprise he only discovered after signing me! It seems “Lost In Your Eyes” has a beautiful way of weaving itself into life’s most romantic moments, making it a truly perfect anniversary song for so many.
This song truly is a gift that keeps on giving, a melody bestowed upon me by the song fairies, and one I am incredibly blessed to call my own. But in reality, “Lost In Your Eyes” belongs to all of us. To everyone who has ever found solace, love, or a cherished memory within its notes, thank you for listening and loving it throughout the years. It’s more than just a song; it’s become ‘our anniversary song’, a soundtrack to countless love stories.
Happy #1 Day to “Lost in Your Eyes”!
