The invitation to a special screening of Disney’s live-action Aladdin arrived, and my “yes” was instantaneous. Like many, the animated Aladdin (1992) holds a special place in my heart, its soundtrack a collection of timeless classics. The anticipation for this new rendition, especially how it would reimagine those beloved Aladdin songs, was immense. Finally, sitting in the theater, ready to experience Agrabah anew, I was eager to see if it could capture the magic – and more importantly, the music – of the original.

From the opening notes, it was clear this wasn’t just a remake; it was a vibrant reimagining. The film masterfully blends nostalgia with fresh, contemporary elements, ensuring it resonates with both longtime fans and a new generation. It felt familiar, yet excitingly different, elevated by stunning visual effects, compelling characters brought to life, and, of course, new songs alongside the classics to adore. Imagine a Broadway musical infused with cutting-edge CGI – that’s the magic of this new Aladdin.

The pacing is relentless, a rollercoaster of action from start to finish, even past the credits. Even if you know the animated film intimately, this live-action version keeps you utterly engaged. It’s a thrilling experience, waiting for those iconic moments and musical numbers you cherish, yet constantly surprised by fresh interpretations that make the narrative feel genuinely new. This is especially true for the Aladdin songs, which are re-energized and expanded upon in spectacular ways.

For me, as a dancer with a lifelong passion for music and choreography, the music and dance sequences were the absolute highlight. This film elevates both to breathtaking heights. It embraces all the beloved songs from the original Aladdin movie soundtrack while introducing a powerful new anthem, “Speechless,” performed by Naomi Scott as Jasmine. This show-stopping song, crafted by Tony and Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul in collaboration with original Aladdin composer Alan Menken, is a true standout. “Speechless” is more than just a new addition; it’s a pivotal moment in the film, a powerful expression of Jasmine’s strength and determination that is already generating Oscar buzz for Best Original Song. Days later, and the Aladdin songs are still playing on repeat in my mind! The choreography, masterminded by Jamal Sims, is simply phenomenal. The dance sequences were so captivating; I felt an irresistible urge to join in!

Beyond the mesmerizing music, the costume design is equally spectacular. Each piece is a work of art, bursting with vibrant and inviting colors. While Will Smith’s Genie boasts some truly eye-catching outfits, Jasmine’s wardrobe is particularly stunning and elaborate. The sheer scale of the costumes is staggering. During the “Prince Ali” musical number, which featured 250 dancers and 200 extras, Michael Wilkinson and his team created over 200 costumes from scratch just for the extras. The attention to detail in every aspect, from costumes to song arrangements, contributes to the overall immersive experience.
It’s challenging to pick a favorite character, as each actor embodies their role perfectly, creating incredible on-screen chemistry. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin is instantly charming and heroic, capturing your heart from his very first scene. Naomi Scott’s Jasmine is nothing short of perfection – intelligent, strong, poised, and with dance moves that could rival a rock star. She is the princess every little girl will aspire to be.

Will Smith faced the daunting task of stepping into Robin Williams’ shoes as the Genie, and he delivers a performance that is both a loving homage and uniquely his own. He’s charming, hilarious, and immensely talented, eliciting constant laughter from the audience. Marwan Kenzari as Jafar was perhaps the biggest surprise. While the villain, his portrayal is nuanced and captivating. His passion and intensity are mesmerizing, proving Lucinda Syson’s casting choices were spot-on across the board.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and rated PG, Aladdin is perfect for a family outing. However, if you have very young children or those sensitive to loud noises or darker scenes, previewing it beforehand might be wise. Some sequences are intense and visually dramatic, adding to the film’s overall impact.

And to keep the magic alive at home, the Disney x Hasbro Aladdin Agrabah doll collection is a must-have for fans of all ages! This movie is a complete sensory experience, and the music of Aladdin is a key component that elevates it to a truly magical cinematic event.
