Chasing Waterfalls: Finding Solace and Wonder in Nature’s Embrace

In a world often echoing with the cautionary lyrics of TLC’s “Waterfalls,” I found myself drawn to the very essence of those cascading wonders. Grief-stricken by the loss of my mother, I, a city dweller at heart, sought refuge in the embrace of nature, specifically in chasing waterfalls and exploring the quietude of woods. It was in these natural sanctuaries that I discovered not just solace, but a profound sense of wonder. My journey led me to the waters, both literally and as a metaphor for emotional healing.

My initial steps into this watery path began at Lake Hartwell, straddling the border of South Carolina and Georgia. It was here, with my rescue Cocker Spaniel, Zora, that I took my first walk. Our shared awkwardness in navigating the terrain was comically juxtaposed with the stoic presence of buzzards nearby. This place became an unexpected teacher, revealing that even at rock bottom, there’s beauty to be found. Lake Hartwell became my sanctuary for phone calls with my brother, bridging geographical distances with shared memories and the practicalities of long-term care arrangements. The stark yellow and black “Road Ends In Water” signs served as a poignant backdrop to these reflective moments. The shimmering lake and gentle breeze offered a sense of peace amidst the swirling emotions.

The therapeutic power of water extended beyond the lake’s edge. Wrapped in sorrow, I found myself in the shower, letting the water cascade over me, a symbolic cleansing of grief.

Embracing the Journey: From Issaquena to Tallulah Falls

The pursuit of waterfalls while navigating grief proved to be a challenging yet deeply rewarding endeavor. Locations like Issaquena Falls in Walhalla and a return to the majestic Tallulah Falls in Georgia became pivotal points in my healing journey. These destinations led me along roads and trails that traced parts of the Appalachian Mountains, each step a celebration of nature’s artistry.

The names themselves held a certain magic, none more so than L’Eau D’or Falls, or Golden Waters, within Tallulah Falls. Beyond the well-trodden paths, hidden gems awaited discovery, such as the missed trailheads leading to Reedy Branch Falls Long Creek near Mountain Rest, SC, and the urban oasis of Falls Park on the Reedy in Greenville. Each location offered a unique facet of nature’s beauty, contributing to the tapestry of my healing experience.

Toccoa Falls: A Moment of Divine Connection

Toccoa Falls in Toccoa, GA, presented a different kind of encounter. Accessible via a short trail, the gently flowing waters resonated with a profound sense of peace. It was here, amidst the tranquil sounds, that I whispered, “God is in That!” The tallest waterfall of my journey, Toccoa lived up to its name, meaning beautiful. It was a moment of pure presence, a desire to capture and hold onto the stillness and wonder. Climbing closer to the falls, the mist mingled with the elements, creating a moment of silent communion, a tribute to my mother. Chasing that waterfall was a decision I was profoundly grateful for.

Encounters and Reflections at Henderson Falls

Exploring Toccoa further led me across a charming wooden bridge, reminiscent of a troll bridge, over a stream that guided me to Henderson Falls within its park. The brisk cascade of water into a lagoon-like pool was accompanied by the joyful sounds of children playing. It was here I met a delightful “mermaid” – a gap-toothed girl in shorts and a tie-dye shirt – who gifted me a stone from her collection. Engaging with her family, I learned about local lore, haunted houses, and more hidden waterfalls, enriching my journey with unexpected connections and local insights.

Following these enriching encounters, the call of Southern cuisine became irresistible. M & J Home Cooking Country Buffet in Toccoa proved to be a culinary beacon, especially for a butter bean enthusiast. Their fried fish and strawberry cobbler offered a comforting taste of Southern soul food. A post-meal stroll around the gravel parking lot marked the journey homeward, carrying with me the day’s experiences.

The Healing Essence of Water and Human Connection

The healing properties of water are undeniable, woven into the fabric of these natural experiences. Crawling over rocks, stepping stones, and immersing oneself in nature fosters a profound connection with “human nature in nature.” Encounters with fellow travelers – motorcyclists offering fist bumps, couples celebrating getaways, families exploring nature’s wonders – highlighted the shared human experience of finding joy and fascination in simple things. From insects trilling to butterflies floating, these moments served as reminders to embrace the beauty of simplicity.

My quest for waterfalls continues, southward and northward. With each step along rims and trails, sunnies on, I remain a city girl transformed, forever chasing waterfalls. The journey reinforces the profound truth: Road Ends In Water, but within that ending lies a beginning of healing and wonder.
