The Evolution of Streaming Supremacy

Over Spotify’s history, only a handful of songs have held the title of the most streamed track. It started with Coldplay’s Viva La Vida. Notably, two songs maintained their reign for over 1,000 days: Human by The Killers and Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. Interestingly, Shape of You is unique in having held the top spot on two separate occasions, as Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud also led the charts in 2015.

The Ever-Increasing Bar for Streaming Success

When we first started tracking these numbers, reaching 500 million streams was a significant achievement. Back in 2015, Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud was the first song to break this barrier, hitting the milestone on October 11, 2015.

Just over a year later, on December 15, 2015, One Dance became the first song to reach one billion streams. Shape Of You then set new records, becoming the first to surpass both 2 billion (December 10, 2018) and 3 billion streams (December 22, 2021). On January 12, 2024, Blinding Lights crossed the 4 billion mark and is projected to hit 5 billion in 2025.

The density of streams at the top is rapidly increasing. Soon, a song will need 3 billion streams just to crack the top 20. The entire top 100 now boasts over 2 billion streams each. While reaching a billion streams was once the ultimate benchmark, even songs in the lower ranks of the top 1,000 are steadily approaching this milestone. Our data reveals over 2,500 tracks with more than 500 million streams, and new songs join this list almost daily.

Streaming Records and Milestones

Taylor Swift’s Fortnight featuring Post Malone achieved the biggest debut and single-day stream count ever, with 25,204,472 filtered streams on April 19, 2024. For non-debut tracks, Mariah Carey’s perennial Christmas classic, All I Want For Christmas Is You, holds the record for daily streams with 23,701,697. Among non-holiday songs, Miley Cyrus’ Flowers set a record with 18,424,325 streams within its first week.

Flowers and Fortnight also hold the top two spots for weekly streams, with 115,156,896 and 102,878,399 streams respectively. They are the only songs to have ever exceeded 9-digit weekly stream figures.

In terms of chart longevity, Tones and I’s Dance Monkey is the undisputed champion. This 2019 hit topped Spotify’s daily chart for an impressive 120 days. Post Malone ft. 21 Savage’s Rockstar leads the weekly chart, holding the number one position for 17 weeks.
