From Ellie Gisler Murphy, Caramoor’s Senior Artist Planning Manager:
Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” is widely recognized as one of the most profoundly romantic songs, brought to mainstream acclaim by Billy Joel and later, Adele. However, for me, this song transcends typical romantic interpretations, resonating with a deeper, more profound emotion: the boundless love of a parent.
This powerful song took on a new dimension in my life during the fragile early stages of pregnancy. Those first twelve weeks are often filled with uncertainty, and in that period, the lyrics, “I know you haven’t made your mind up yet, but I will never do you wrong,” struck a deeply emotional chord. Even now, these words can bring tears to my eyes. While many hear a lover’s plea in “Make You Feel My Love Song”, I’ve always felt it as an anthem of parental devotion. Who wouldn’t willingly endure hardship for their child? The song evokes a lifetime of moments with my daughter, from the miracle of birth to navigating the turbulent waters of toddlerhood and adolescence, and now, looking ahead to her future as she pursues her dreams. Every step of her journey is something we eagerly anticipate and cherish. Bob Dylan’s signature raspy voice delivers these poignant lines with raw emotion:
When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
Oh, I hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven’t made your mind up yet
But I will never do you wrong
I’ve known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I’d go hungry; I’d go black and blue
And I’d go crawling down the avenue
No, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothing like me yet
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends of this Earth for you
To make you feel my love, oh yes
To make you feel my love
