Every branch of the United States Armed Forces boasts a song that encapsulates its spirit and heritage. From the Army’s rousing “The Army Goes Rolling Along” to the Navy’s steadfast “Anchors Aweigh,” these anthems are integral to military identity. Now, the newest branch, the U.S. Space Force, established in 2019, has officially joined this tradition with its own song: “Semper Supra.” Unveiled at the 2022 Air & Space Forces Association Air, Space and Cyber Conference, “Semper Supra”—Latin for “Always Above,” the USSF motto—is designed to resonate with Guardians, both present and future, fostering unity and pride.
The creation of the Space Force Song was a collaborative effort spearheaded by two former service members. Singer-songwriter James Teachenor, a U.S. Air Force Academy band alumnus, conceived the lyrics and melody, driving the song’s vision. He initiated the project in 2019 in partnership with Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, recognizing a unique opportunity to establish a lasting element of Space Force culture. General Raymond emphasized the importance of traditions in uniting service members, stating his pride in singing “Semper Supra” alongside fellow Guardians.
Teachenor’s foundational work then progressed to military bands for musical arrangement. Chief musician Sean Nelson, a trombonist and staff arranger with the U.S. Coast Guard Band, played a crucial role. Nelson aimed to give “Semper Supra” a modern edge reflecting the Space Force’s contemporary and advanced nature, distinguishing it from songs of older branches. He built upon Teachenor’s base, adding over 30 instrument parts, culminating in a recording by the USCG band. This version underwent Space Force review, leading to refinements and variations until the definitive “Semper Supra” was selected.
