This isn’t just a regurgitation of chart positions. Our team of music experts has delved deep into the archives, hand-picking the songs that we believe represent the pinnacle of pop songwriting and performance over the past 65 years. To ensure a diverse representation and celebrate a wide array of artists, we’ve limited ourselves to a maximum of three songs per lead artist within our top 500.

One of pop’s defining characteristics, and perhaps one of the reasons it’s so often underestimated by critics, is its very lack of rigid sonic boundaries. Conversely, tracks that screamed “This is POP!” – even if they haven’t always received widespread critical acclaim – were given special consideration. Our definition of pop might differ slightly from yours – even our own team had passionate debates! – but we trust that as you explore our list, you’ll recognize that unmistakable “pop” magic in each and every selection.
