Like many boaters, we cherish the name of our vessel, and ours, “Happy Together,” always gets people talking. It’s not usually because they’re puzzled about its origin – most assume it’s a nod to the iconic song by The Turtles. Instead, the question we often hear is, “So, are you?” And to that, our answer is always a resounding, “YES!”
The name “Happy Together” came to us over 18 years ago, long before we bought our first Sea Ray. We were enjoying a day on Boca Lake when we spotted another Sea Ray christened “Happy Together.” It was a lightbulb moment. We instantly knew that was the perfect name for us, and we’ve happily used it for every boat we’ve owned since. Interestingly, karma has a funny way of working – a couple of boats we sold retained the name because the new owners loved it just as much! The real bonus of the name is that it came with its own built-in theme song, a classic we’ve played countless times while out on the water – the “Happy Together Song.”
More recently, Randy has taken to creating videos of our boating adventures, and he’s always on the lookout for the perfect soundtrack. He discovered “Sailing” by Leisure Cruise, and it became an instant favorite. This awesome track, with its lyrics about seizing the day and enjoying life’s journey now rather than waiting for a potentially too-late future, resonated deeply with us. The chorus, with the line “and to our surprise, we’re sailing the high seas in the middle of the ocean Spinny and me,” became particularly special. Every time we played it while sailing, Randy would playfully change the words to “Lennie and Me.”
On our 15th wedding anniversary, Randy truly outdid himself with a surprise. He revealed that he’d contacted Leisure Cruise and asked if they would consider recording a personalized version of “Sailing” with the lyrics changed to “Lennie and me.” While it might sound like a far-fetched idea to most, knowing Randy, I never doubted his ability to make it happen. He has a remarkable knack for persuading people when he sets his mind to something. After several emails and calls to the band’s manager, they were charmed by our story, and incredibly, we now have our own custom song!
I could say this is the most romantic thing Randy has ever done, but honestly, it wouldn’t be entirely accurate. Our life together is a constant stream of romance and happiness, both on and off the water. This personalized “Happy Together song” is just another beautiful melody in our ongoing love story.
