Remembering Barbara Ann Ragle: A Life Sung with Love and Kindness

Barbara Ann Ragle, a woman whose life resonated with the warmth and familiarity of a beloved tune, passed away peacefully at her home on July 23, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on December 30, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Marguerite and Fred Essig, Barbara’s life was a testament to faith, family, and the simple joys that echo through generations, much like the enduring melody of a classic song.

Graduating from Liberty High School, Barbara embarked on her life’s most cherished role when she married Willard Ragle in 1956. Together, they built a home filled with love and Christian values, raising four children. For Barbara, being a stay-at-home mother wasn’t just a role; it was her heartfelt vocation. During her children’s school years, she dedicated herself to their upbringing, creating a nurturing environment while also contributing to the community through roles on the election board and at Macy’s. Her commitment extended to volunteering at her children’s schools, serving as a room mother and den mother, always ready to lend a hand and support their endeavors.

Barbara’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She was known for her love of baking, filling her home with comforting aromas and delicious treats. Her talent for finding bargains was legendary, a practical skill she used to lovingly decorate her home, creating a warm and inviting space for all. In her moments of leisure, Barbara found joy in reading, immersing herself in stories, and watching classic movies. Music, especially the old tunes, held a special place in her heart. Her grandchildren fondly remember car rides filled with “old music,” especially their enthusiastic requests for the “Be Bop” song – a likely reference to the timelessly catchy “Barbara Ann Song,” a tune as cheerful and memorable as Barbara herself. This simple request highlights the joy and light she brought to her family, a melody of love that played throughout her life.

Beyond her home, Barbara was always prepared to offer help to anyone in need, embodying Christian charity in her daily actions. Her Bible was a constant companion, a source of comfort, guidance, and strength that underpinned her unwavering faith. For the past three years, she found fellowship and community at Fellowship of Grace Church, attending services with her son.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Marguerite and Fred Essig; her brothers, Joseph Compton and James Essig; her sisters, Jeanne Meadows and Sylvia Short; and Willard Ragle, the father of her children. She was the last surviving member of her siblings, marking the end of an era for her family. Her legacy continues through her four children, Donna (John) Barcus, Karen (Roger) Wagoner, Peggy Lancaster, and David (Melinda) Ragle; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren, with another expected soon; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom carry forward the melody of her love and kindness.

Funeral services to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral & Cemetery on Saturday, July 27th. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00pm, and then burial. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Barbara’s giving spirit with donations to the Parkville Animal Shelter, reflecting her compassionate heart.

Barbara Ann Ragle will be lovingly remembered for her unwavering kindness, her deep love for her family, and her steadfast faith. Her life, like a cherished Barbara Ann song, will continue to bring warmth and fond memories to all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
