The Netherlands is set to participate in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Switzerland, following assurances of rule changes from the event organizers. However, Joost Klein, the Dutch singer and rapper who was dramatically excluded from this year’s competition, has decided not to represent his country again.
Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS announced their participation in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, confirming they were satisfied with the reforms promised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). These changes come after the controversial events of the 2024 contest in Sweden, which saw Joost Klein, a strong contender, disqualified following an alleged backstage incident.
During the semi-finals in Malmo, a female member of the production crew accused Klein of making threats. This accusation led to the involvement of Swedish authorities, though they ultimately chose not to prosecute. Despite being a fan favorite and tipped as a potential winner, Klein was barred from rehearsals and prevented from performing in the grand final.
Reflecting on the tumultuous experience, Joost Klein considered a potential return to the Eurovision stage. “My team and I had everything ready, but it just doesn’t feel good,” Klein stated. “I need to give myself more time to heal.” While Klein will not be the Dutch representative, the news of the Netherlands’ return to Eurovision 2025 has undoubtedly lifted the spirits of Dutch Eurovision enthusiasts.
AVROTROS explained that after extensive discussions with the EBU, they received “sufficient guarantees” that significant structural changes would be implemented at the renowned music festival. These changes for the 2025 edition in Basel will include a “significantly reduced” level of backstage filming, the introduction of a dedicated safety manager, and the establishment of a safe space for all performers.
The broadcaster had previously described Klein’s removal as “very heavy and disproportionate,” leaving the Netherlands’ participation in the 69th edition of the festival uncertain. Joost Klein’s Eurovision song, “Europapa,” a vibrant Euro-techno track celebrating European diversity and serving as a poignant tribute to his deceased parents, was widely tipped for victory.
Ultimately, the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest was won by Switzerland’s Nemo, who garnered the highest points from both national juries and viewers worldwide.
With their participation confirmed, AVROTROS has now begun the search for a new artist to represent the Netherlands in 2025. Aspiring performers have until November 22nd to submit their applications, marking the start of a new chapter for the Dutch in the Eurovision Song Contest.
