Hip-hop officially became the number one genre in the U.S. in 2017, according to Nielsen, marking a significant shift in the music landscape. Spotify’s U.S. hip-hop editorial team, led by Carl Chery, Creative Director and Head of Urban Music, undertook the massive task of curating this definitive list. This selection is purely qualitative, judged on criteria like song quality, cultural impact, replay value, influence, and overall significance.
